Martist Services Pvt. Ltd. is an integrated marketing agency led by Madhulika Joshi, its founder, CEO and Chief Creative Officer. The company positions itself as an alternative to two familiar agency models: the specialist that does one discipline well, and the larger network whose services pass between separate teams. Its pitch is a single team that starts from the client’s business problem and builds communication around it.

This profile covers the founder’s background, the market gap that shaped the business, the service portfolio, the operating approach and the company’s stated plans.

Founder Background

Madhulika Joshi has more than two decades of experience in marketing and brand building across hospitality, lifestyle, retail, wellness and other consumer-facing businesses. She holds an MBA in advertising and PR and began her career in 1999 in the brand communication division of Leela Ventures, part of the Leela Group of Hotels. Later roles include work with Pidilite Industries and Fevicol, where she contributed to the launch of Hobby Ideas, an arts and crafts initiative.

Before starting her own company she held senior brand and marketing roles in established organisations, which she says gave her a working understanding of both brand-building and business realities from the client side. She then moved into strategic marketing consulting and founded Martist Services Pvt. Ltd.

Joshi has said she initially aimed to be a copywriter at a creative agency in Mumbai, with a flair for quirky copy since her college days, before brand marketing and PR drew her in at Leela. In those early roles, responsibilities were less defined than the structured divisions seen today, and she worked across PR, media relations and collaboration with advertising agencies.

Market Gap and Founding Rationale

Joshi identifies two gaps that shaped Martist. The first is fragmentation. Brands commonly use separate partners for strategy, social media, creative, digital, content, PR and campaigns, and the thinking across them is not always connected. The second is how agencies are perceived. Many are treated as execution partners instead of strategic collaborators, and some do not develop a deep enough understanding of the client’s business.

Martist was built to address both. The model joins strategy, creativity, content and execution, and treats the client brief as the starting point of the work. The team examines the commercial objective, the consumer, the category and what the brand needs to achieve. The founder also set out to build an agency culture with a stronger sense of ownership.

Service Portfolio

Martist describes itself as an integrated marketing agency. Its service lines, drawn from the company’s own materials, are:

  • Brand strategy and brand workshops
  • Creative communication, design and visual storytelling
  • Campaign planning and campaigns
  • Social media marketing
  • Digital and performance marketing
  • Content marketing
  • Influencer engagement
  • Public relations support
  • Out-of-home solutions

The company operates through several sub-verticals, or sub-agencies, each focused on a different part of marketing. Storytelling is central to the approach. Management says every brand has a story, and that the value lies in identifying the right one, shaping it well and telling it consistently across platforms and touchpoints.

Brand Identity and Positioning

Martist’s identity rests on a stated belief that every marketer is an artist, someone who inspires, ideates and co-creates. The company describes itself as a creatively inspired team, and its stated purpose is to creatively inspire those with big ideas and keep igniting their dreams. The positioning is consistent with the founder’s emphasis on combining strategic thinking with creativity, and with her dual title of CEO and Chief Creative Officer.

That creative framing sits alongside a commercial one. Management says the work is meant to create impact for the business as well as for the brand’s image, and that visibility alone is not the goal.

Operating Approach

Martist describes a sequence that begins with the business objective, moves to the audience and the brand context, and only then arrives at the communication. The company says it does not look at services in isolation. The stated aim is strategy-led storytelling that builds relevance, connection and long-term brand value, not visibility alone.

For consulting engagements, the first step is identifying the pain points a brand faces, whether it is a new launch or an established name. From there the team builds a tailored plan that may be content-led or branding-led, and may address issues such as trust among employees or customers.

Cross-Category Experience

Martist and its leadership have worked across hospitality, retail, wellness, lifestyle, travel and other sectors. Management describes this breadth as one of the company’s strongest differentiators, because learnings from one industry can be applied in another. For clients, the practical benefit is a fresh outside view. A team that has seen how a hotel handles guest loyalty or how a wellness brand builds trust can bring that thinking to a retailer facing a similar problem.

Leadership View on Content and Industry Direction

Joshi’s public commentary on the sector gives context for how Martist approaches client work. She notes that content has moved from a reliance on slogans and taglines, as in Amul’s witty advertisements, to a range of formats and channels that each need a tailored strategy. Video has risen in prominence, and relatability has become a deciding factor in whether content succeeds.

Her definition of good content is simplicity with an emotional dimension, and she cites Cadbury’s festive content and the Amul Girl campaign as examples that have lasted. She advises brands to use in-moment marketing selectively, since not every brand can use trending topics credibly. She also holds that clients should be educated on the point that return on investment covers reach and engagement as well as immediate monetary gains.

Growth Challenges and Management Response

Joshi describes the move from marketer to company builder as the principal challenge. Founders must manage people, processes, cash flow, client relationships, hiring, culture, quality and growth at the same time. A second challenge has been scaling without diluting the quality of thinking and execution the company wants to be known for.

Management’s response has had four parts: greater selectivity in the clients and projects taken on, stronger internal processes, more empowerment for the team, and a focus on clients who value strategic thinking over execution alone. Joshi calls the process one of learning, unlearning and constant course correction.

Client Relationships and the Shift to Strategic Mandates

The company identifies its main milestone as a change in how clients engage with it. Martist moved from being viewed as an execution partner to being trusted with larger strategic mandates. Clients increasingly ask for direction as well as deliverables, and bring the agency into brand direction, campaign thinking, positioning and wider business discussions.

Management says this has reinforced a preference for fewer transactional relationships and stronger partnerships, with work in which the agency’s thinking is valued as much as its execution.

Strategic Outlook and Community Commitment

Over the next five years, the company intends to strengthen its position as an integrated, strategy-led marketing partner known for storytelling, sharper thinking and brand-building across sectors. Plans include a more selective portfolio of high-value clients, deeper capabilities and stronger proprietary thinking, with work that has both creative and business impact.

Management also commits to mentoring and grooming young professionals entering the industry and exposing them to real-world learning. Joshi frames the next phase as growth in relevance and influence, and in the value created for clients, teams and the wider marketing community, rather than growth in size alone.

On the wider industry, Joshi expects artificial intelligence to play a larger role in personalised marketing over the next three to five years. She also cautions that consumer fatigue with constant content could push brands toward simpler, less intrusive communication.

Advice From the Founder

Joshi’s guidance to aspiring entrepreneurs is to start with clarity about why they want to build a business, not only what they want to sell. She describes entrepreneurship as demanding patience, resilience, financial discipline, adaptability and continuous learning. She advises against waiting for perfect conditions while warning that speed should not be mistaken for progress, and recommends listening closely to customers, choosing people carefully and staying close to the business.

For those entering marketing, she recommends staying informed about industry developments while keeping hold of the discipline’s foundational principles.
