In a major structural pivot away from its historical manufacturing hub in China, tech giant Apple is setting its sights on shifting up to 30-35% of its global iPhone production to India over the next five years.

Currently assembling roughly 25% (1 in every 4) of all global iPhones in India, Apple’s accelerated diversification strategy marks one of the most significant supply chain realignments in modern tech history.

Why Is Apple Accelerating Its Shift to India?

Apple’s supply chain strategy—long reliant on mega-factories in China—has faced increasing pressure due to geopolitical tensions, trade tariffs, and severe operational disruptions over recent years. The move to scale up Indian manufacturing operations serves several strategic objectives:

  • De-Risking from China: As US-China trade friction persists, assembling devices in India provides Apple with a vital buffer against potential tariffs and supply chain bottlenecks.

  • Policy & Government Support: India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has created a highly favorable environment for global tech firms. Following the success of the initial Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, the government introduced a fresh ₹62,500-crore incentive package and extended tax exemptions for contract manufacturing through 2041.

  • Massive Economic Output: Market analysts estimate that increasing India’s production share to 35% will push the total annual value of Indian-made iPhones from $25 billion to between $40 billion and $45 billion by 2031.

Domestic Giants and Global Assembly Partners Lead the Charge

The expansion in India is driven by both primary global manufacturing partners and homegrown conglomerates:

  1. Tata Group: Emerging as a powerhouse in Apple’s supply chain, Tata Electronics has rapidly expanded its manufacturing capabilities following key acquisitions of assembly facilities, now accounting for a rapidly growing share of Indian iPhone exports.

  2. Foxconn: Apple’s largest contract manufacturer continues to expand its footprint, evaluating new mega-facilities including a proposed 200+ acre technology park in Gujarat alongside major existing hubs near Chennai and Bengaluru.

What This Means for India’s Tech Ecosystem

Smartphones have already surged to become India’s top export product, with iPhones accounting for the vast majority of those shipments.

Beyond assembly, Apple is actively building a domestic ecosystem involving over 40 local suppliers and precision engineering firms. This shift isn’t just about assembling hardware—it is integrating India into Apple’s core engineering and product development pipeline, turning the nation into a primary global export engine.
