The Zahra Foundation was founded in 1976 by Sayyid Ismail Shihabudheen Thangal, known as Panoor Thangal, and is an initiative of Jami Zahra, a non-profit educational organization based in Panoor, Kerala, India. Panoor Thangal is a symbol of Islamic thought that has led to the progressive development of education and social services in India and abroad. The foundation works to realize the principles of modern Islam by encouraging and inspiring meaningful action and advocating for justice and equality around the world. Founder Ala Hamishi Thafaseer, written in Arabic, is currently the most popular and well-studied university-level Thafaseer in India and abroad.
Zayed Mohammed Makhdum, the son of the founder, is the Chairman of this foundation who is a visionary leader embraced the organization’s vision of reaching out on a global scale. He has a deep understanding of Islamic history, theology, philosophy, and knowledge of the modern world. He has a strong passion for building bridges between people of different faiths and backgrounds, and is committed to promoting peace, justice and understanding between people of all cultures.
Under his auspices, the Zahra Foundation has made great strides in fulfilling its mission of promoting contemporary understanding of Islamic values and principles and providing a platform for meaningful dialogue, has created several educational programs and initiatives, such as the International Islamic Think Tank and the Visionary Values Initiative, to disseminate knowledge of contemporary Islamic thought and encourage constructive dialogue among contemporary Islamic scholars and professionals.
The Foundation has also worked with organizations around the world to promote social justice and human rights. It hosts events and conferences that bring together leading Islamic scholars and experts from around the world. Through these events, the Foundation helps create a global platform for meaningful dialogue and cooperation that advances the causes of peace, justice and understanding.
Additionally, Zayed Mohmmed Makhdum personally speaks out against extremism and the importance of religious tolerance and understanding. He was also a leader in advocating for the rights of women and marginalized communities in the Muslim world.
