Are you curious to know what your genes tell you? What risk are you carrying for skin aging, what ingredients are relevant for you, and how can you focus best on those skin concerns?
“Let your DNA do the talking. We do the rest”. Said Dr.M.Sai Babu and Rizwan Younus, founders of CosmoGene skin care, Hyderabad-based India’s first DNA-based skincare company.
How your DNA affects the aging of your skin?
By examining your DNA, we can gain more insights into your skin’s aging process. In the lab, we analyze several genes involved in collagen homeostasis, antioxidant protection, glycation, sensitivity, and inflammation. Based on your DNA profile, we know your risks, and we develop products whose ingredients can counteract these risks.
Tissue damage by free radicals is one of the main causes of accelerated skin aging. Free radicals are formed due to external stress factors, such as tobacco, pollution, or exposure to UV radiation.
We have a natural ‘built-in’ protection mechanism since our skin produces antioxidants that can neutralize free radicals before they cause damage. But when this defensive mechanism does not function properly, traces of skin aging will be more visible.
CosmoGene investigates how well your defense mechanism works by detecting antioxidant genes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD-2) mutations.
Collagen is the most important structural protein of the extracellular matrix and is responsible for the firmness and elasticity of your skin. Collagen is created every time your skin renews itself (every 28 days). Sufficient production of collagen contributes to beautiful and tighter skin.
Collagen is also broken down, and this is a natural process. Breakdown or degradation can be accelerated under external stress factors such as UV light. It activates enzymes like matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) that ‘eat away’ the collagen. The balance between collagen production and degradation determines the velocity of the skin aging process.
When MMP genes show mutations or errors, they are “overactive” and break down collagen faster. This creates an imbalance toward faster collagen breakdown, negatively affecting your skin’s firmness and elasticity. Dr.M.Sai Babu said that in the CosmoGene DNA test, “We investigate mutations in different MMP genes and determine your risk of accelerated collagen degradation.”
