The Jamui case in Bihar has drawn attention after a video showing the alleged harassment and assault of two minors surfaced on social media. Police have arrested accused persons, formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT), and launched separate action against accounts accused of circulating material that could reveal the identity of a minor.

The incident took place on September 19 in the Jamui area when the two school students were returning after tuition. The investigation has since expanded to include the alleged assault, the identification and arrest of suspects, and the online circulation of the video.

What Happened in the Jamui Case?

According to police and reports based on the investigation, the two minors were travelling on a two-wheeler after tuition when they went towards the hilly outskirts of Jamui. A group of youths allegedly stopped and surrounded them.

The teenagers were allegedly assaulted and harassed during the incident. The girl was allegedly subjected to inappropriate physical contact, while the boy was also assaulted. The incident was recorded on video and subsequently circulated on social media.

The incident reportedly occurred on the evening of September 19 near the Madwa Pahar area along the Jamui-Lakhisarai route. Police later used material from the video as part of their efforts to identify those involved.

The victims initially did not approach the police immediately. According to the police account reported by The Indian Express, the matter came to the authorities’ attention after the video began circulating, following which officers contacted the victims and their families.

Police Investigation and Arrests in the Jamui Case

The Jamui police constituted a Special Investigation Team to investigate the incident and identify those involved. The SIT was headed by Jamui Sub-Divisional Police Officer Deepti Monali, according to police officials quoted by The Indian Express.

The investigation initially resulted in the apprehension of three juveniles. Police subsequently arrested the main accused, Nandan Yadav, along with another accused, Hareram Yadav, during raids on September 22.

Police said Nandan Yadav was injured in the leg during an encounter while officers were attempting to arrest him. According to the police account reported by The Indian Express, the accused allegedly opened fire while attempting to escape, following which police fired in self-defence.

The circumstances surrounding the police firing are based on the police account, and the investigation into the case is continuing.

Reports on the number of arrests have varied as the investigation has developed. A September 22 report from All India Radio said five accused had been arrested, while later reports said all seven people identified in connection with the alleged incident had been arrested.

The distinction is important because separate arrests have also been reported in connection with the circulation of the video online.

What Police Have Said About the Viral Video

The video became an important part of the investigation after it was widely circulated on social media.

Police said investigators examined the footage to identify people allegedly involved in the incident. The footage also helped investigators trace the victims and identify suspects, according to reports.

However, the circulation of the video created a separate concern because it contained material that could reveal the identity of a minor.

Jamui police appealed to people not to share or repost the footage. Authorities also began taking steps to have copies of the material removed from online platforms.

For news organisations and social-media users, the issue is particularly significant because Indian law places restrictions on revealing the identity of child victims of sexual offences. Protecting women and girls also remains an important part of India’s wider conversation around women-led development

Action Against Social Media Accounts

Jamui Cyber Police reportedly registered a separate case against around 120 social-media profile holders for circulating the video and potentially revealing the identity of the minor victim. Police said action was being taken against accounts and URLs carrying the material.

The development highlights an important distinction between reporting on a criminal investigation and reproducing material connected to the alleged offence.

Sharing a video involving a child victim can cause additional harm and can potentially expose identifying information even when the person’s name is not directly mentioned.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) says media coverage of cases involving child victims must protect the child’s identity and privacy. Its guidance refers to Section 23 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, which restricts publication of identifying details such as a child’s name, address, photograph, school and other information that could lead to identification.

Why the Identity of the Minors Must Be Protected

The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, commonly known as the POCSO Act, provides a legal framework for protecting children from sexual offences. The law also contains specific provisions governing how the media should report cases involving child victims.

Section 23 of the POCSO Act addresses the procedure for media reporting. It prohibits reports from disclosing the identity of a child, including through details such as name, address, photograph, family information, school or neighbourhood, unless disclosure is permitted by the Special Court in the interest of the child.

For this reason, the Jamui case should be reported without publishing the identity of either minor or reproducing the video of the alleged incident.

The NCPCR’s media handbook also advises journalists to use accurate terminology, avoid language that minimises the offence, protect the child’s privacy and verify information through credible sources.

What Happens Next in the Jamui Case?

The investigation is continuing, with police examining the role of the people identified in connection with the incident.

Police have said they are working to establish the sequence of events and gather evidence for the case. Officials have also indicated that they are examining the backgrounds and possible criminal records of some of the accused.

The police encounter involving the main accused is also part of the developing sequence of events. Police have said the accused attempted to escape and fired at the police team, leading officers to retaliate. The injured accused was subsequently taken to hospital.

Separately, the online circulation of the video remains under investigation. Police have identified numerous social-media accounts and URLs linked to the circulation of the footage, according to reports.

The National Commission for Women has also sought an action-taken report from Bihar’s Director General of Police. The commission has called for the case to be investigated in a time-bound manner and for the victims to receive security and appropriate assistance.

Online Responsibility After the Jamui Case

The Jamui case also raises a wider issue about how users respond when disturbing videos involving minors appear online.

The circulation of such footage can rapidly bring an incident to public attention, but it can also expose victims to further harm. In this case, police specifically began action against accounts accused of circulating material that could reveal the identity of a minor.

For ordinary social-media users, the safest approach is not to download, repost or forward videos involving child victims. Reporting the content to the platform and allowing investigators to handle the original evidence avoids further circulation.

For news organisations, the same principle means using verified information to explain what happened without reproducing material that could identify or further expose the victims.

Conclusion

The Jamui case remains under investigation following the alleged assault and harassment of two minors on September 19. Police formed an SIT, arrested people identified in connection with the incident, and separately began action over the circulation of the video online.

The case also demonstrates why responsible reporting is particularly important when children are involved. While verified information about the investigation is in the public interest, the identity and privacy of the minors must be protected.

As the investigation proceeds, the next stages will include the collection and examination of evidence, proceedings against those arrested, and further action over the online distribution of material connected to the case.
