For Dev, the entrepreneurial flame didn’t ignite in a boardroom or at a startup boot camp—it flickered to life in a moment of personal reflection.

“During my final year, I had two job offers and a confirmation for IIT admission. But I felt a stronger pull towards creating something of my own,” he recalls.

Amid deliberations, one memory resurfaced with surprising clarity: his grandfather’s spice farm in Kerala.

“That image—lush green cardamom and pepper fields—kept playing in my mind. It made me realize the power of origin and story in the products we consume every day.”

What started as a tribute to his family legacy evolved into Spicesome, a brand that aims to reconnect people with real, farm-fresh spices—unprocessed, unadulterated, and steeped in authenticity.


From Planning to Planting: The Entrepreneur’s Leap

Karthikeya launched Karthikeya Enterprises—a mini-conglomerate that achieved breakeven within just a few months—as his first entrepreneurial experiment. But it was Spicesome that became his flagship expression of purpose.

“I had no business background, and my parents, both in government service, were understandably skeptical. But I convinced them. I had to try—this wasn’t just a project, it was my identity,” he says.

That identity now pulses through Spicesome’s every decision, from product sourcing to packaging. His training in planning may not seem immediately relevant to spice manufacturing, but Karthikeya insists otherwise.

“Urban planning teaches systems thinking. It helped me map out supply chains, forecast demand, and structure sustainable growth.”


Cracking the Code of Consumer Trust

Spicesome emerged from a simple yet striking market insight: most spices on shelves had lost their soul.

“Many products were diluted, full of preservatives, and had zero traceability. I found it hard to trust what I was consuming—and I knew I wasn’t alone,” says Karthikeya.

Spicesome took a bold approach: cutting out middlemen, sourcing directly from farmers, and introducing QR-coded traceability for customers to track the origins of their spices.

The brand’s flagship offerings—aromatic cardamom and bold black pepper—are handpicked, minimally processed, and sold in small batches to preserve flavor and essential oils.

“No fillers, no artificial colors, no shortcuts,” he says. “Our spices are as close to the farm as you can get without getting your hands dirty.”


Roadblocks and Resilience: Lessons from the Ground Up

Like any startup, Spicesome’s path was riddled with obstacles. Convincing skeptical farmers to supply directly, managing perishable inventory, and learning the ropes of legal and logistics were just the beginning.

“One of the biggest challenges was maintaining freshness during transit—without blowing our cost structure. And earning trust, both from suppliers and customers, took relentless effort,” he reflects.

There were missteps and moments of doubt. But Dev turned every failure into fuel.

“I leaned on mentors, sought feedback obsessively, and embraced trial-and-error. My biggest learning? Consistency wins trust. And authenticity resonates.”


A Tipping Point—and a Taste of Scale

Spicesome’s pivotal moment came when a bulk order landed from a major client—unsolicited, discovered through word-of-mouth.

“That order was a turning point. It validated our value proposition. Suddenly, we weren’t just a niche brand with great packaging—we were a real contender,” Karthikeya shares.

The order forced the team to scale production, professionalize operations, and invest in better logistics—all while staying true to their ethos of small-batch, high-integrity sourcing.


Vision 2030: A Global Pantry with Indian Roots

Karthikeya’s ambitions for Spicesome go far beyond Indian kitchens. In five years, he envisions the brand as a global name synonymous with pure, ethically sourced spices.

“We’re expanding our product line to include spice blends, rare regional varieties, and maybe even ready-to-use marinades,” he reveals. “But scale won’t come at the cost of quality. Every new offering will meet the same gold standard.”

There are also plans to deepen farmer partnerships, promote sustainable agriculture, and create interactive digital experiences—like personalized spice recommendations and recipe guides.

“We want Spicesome to be a culinary companion, not just a transaction,” he says.


More Than Just Spice: The Human Element

Beyond the numbers and SKUs, what sets Spicesome apart is its soul—and its storyteller. Whether it’s riffing on a guitar or tweaking supply logistics, Karthikeya brings the same spirit: curiosity, creativity, and care.

“Music and business both require rhythm, patience, and connection,” he smiles. “At the end of the day, I’m trying to build something that reflects who I am—grounded, passionate, and always learning.”

“Start small but stay sharp. Understand your ‘why’—because that’s what will carry you through the tough days. And don’t be afraid to take unconventional paths—sometimes, the best ideas are the ones rooted in your own story.”

He also emphasizes the power of listening:

“Listen to your customers, your mentors, your instincts. Success is rarely loud—it’s built in quiet, consistent effort.”
