Adobe has appointed Anil Chakravarthy as its next President and Chief Executive Officer, marking a significant leadership transition as the software giant accelerates its artificial intelligence (AI) strategy and prepares for its next phase of growth. The appointment will take effect on December 1, 2026, with long-serving CEO Shantanu Narayen transitioning to the role of Executive Chair after leading the company for nearly two decades.

The announcement comes at a pivotal moment for Adobe as the company expands its AI-powered product portfolio while navigating growing competition from emerging AI-native platforms and design software rivals. Industry analysts view the leadership change as a strategic move aimed at strengthening Adobe’s position in an increasingly AI-driven software landscape.

Chakravarthy, who has led Adobe’s Customer Experience Orchestration business and worldwide field operations for the past six years, has been instrumental in driving the company’s enterprise growth. Since joining Adobe in 2020, he has overseen strategy, engineering, product management, enterprise sales, customer success, and professional services, helping global brands modernize their digital customer engagement strategies.

During his tenure, Adobe significantly expanded its AI capabilities across marketing automation, customer experience, and content creation. Chakravarthy played a key role in developing enterprise AI offerings such as Adobe GenStudio and Adobe CX Enterprise, which leverage generative AI and agentic AI technologies to streamline marketing workflows, personalize customer interactions, and improve business productivity.

Before joining Adobe, Chakravarthy served as Chief Executive Officer of Informatica, where he led the cloud data management company through a period of digital transformation. Earlier in his career, he held senior leadership positions at Symantec, VeriSign, and McKinsey & Company, building extensive experience across enterprise software, cybersecurity, and business strategy.

Announcing the leadership transition, Narayen praised Chakravarthy’s ability to lead Adobe into its next chapter.

“Adobe’s opportunity ahead is limitless with our track record in creating new market categories and world-class products. Anil is an experienced transformational leader with a proven record of building category-defining products,” Narayen said, expressing confidence in Chakravarthy’s ability to guide the company through the AI era.

Narayen will continue to work closely with Chakravarthy as Executive Chair to ensure a smooth transition and maintain continuity across Adobe’s long-term strategic initiatives. The move represents one of the most significant executive changes at Adobe since Narayen became CEO in 2007 and led the company’s successful transformation from packaged software to a cloud-based subscription business.

The appointment comes as Adobe faces heightened investor scrutiny over the impact of generative AI on the creative software industry. While the company has aggressively integrated AI features across flagship products including Photoshop, Acrobat, Illustrator, and Firefly, competition has intensified from AI-powered startups and established rivals such as Canva and Figma. Investors are closely watching how Adobe balances innovation with profitability in a rapidly evolving market.

Despite these competitive pressures, Adobe has continued to expand its AI offerings for both creative professionals and enterprise customers. Earlier this year, the company raised its annual profit forecast, citing strong customer adoption of AI-enabled products and enterprise demand for intelligent content creation and customer experience solutions.

The leadership transition also coincides with broader executive changes within Adobe. Earlier in the year, Chief Financial Officer Dan Durn announced his departure, while David Wadhwani, who headed Adobe’s Creativity and Productivity business and was widely considered a contender for the CEO position, confirmed he would also leave the company following the succession announcement.

For Adobe, appointing Chakravarthy signals a stronger focus on enterprise AI, customer experience, and intelligent business automation. His experience leading Adobe’s customer experience division positions him to capitalize on growing enterprise demand for AI-powered marketing, personalization, and digital transformation solutions.

As AI continues to reshape the software industry, Chakravarthy will be tasked with sustaining Adobe’s leadership across creative applications while expanding its enterprise AI portfolio and defending its market position against an increasingly competitive landscape. His appointment underscores Adobe’s belief that the next phase of growth will be driven not only by creative innovation but also by AI-powered customer experiences and enterprise transformation.
