Richmond, Va.- The University of Richmond football team will continue its playoff journey after a 41-0 victory over Davidson at Robins Stadium on Saturday. The Spiders will travel across the country to play Saturday at No. 2 Sacramento State at 5:00 PM ET at Hornet Stadium.
Richmond (9-3) jumped out to a commanding lead early and never looked back as it swept Davidson for the team’s first playoff appearance and first in any game since 2017. The Wildcats end their season with an 8 -4.
The Spiders excelled in all phases, with Richmond’s offense gaining 482 yards while the defense limited Davidson to just 226. Reece Udinski (North Wales, Pa.) was nearly perfect, connecting on 29 of 32 pass attempts for his highest completion percentage (90.3%) this season.
Finding the end zone in each quarter, Aaron Dykes (Knoxville, Tenn.) started Richmond’s scoring spree with a 12-yard rush earlier Andrew Lopez (New Orleans, La.) kicked a 35-yard field goal in the first quarter. The second saw Udinski connect on two touchdown passes – a 25-yard pass Jakob Herres (Easton, Pa.) and a 30-yard completion for it Jerry Garcia Jr. (Hope Mills, NC)– before Jake Larson (Baltimore, Md.) kicked a 46-yard field goal to make it 27-0 at halftime.
The Richmond Run game picked up even more after the break with Milan Howard (Charlotte, NC) driving in two hits for the first multi-hit game of his career. Howard led the Spiders’ ground attack, amassing career highs in both rushing yards (73) and rushing yards (12).
Aaron’s threats (Melbourne, Australia) averaged 46.50 yards per punt on the season and kicked a career-high 63 yards in the contest.
“Really happy to win here,” said the coach Russ Huesman. “I think we played really well in all three phases…offensively we were really efficient and hung on the ball and defensively to play against a team. [like Davidson] it’s really good.”
Leads Spiders with eight tackles including 2.0 for loss (-5) Tristan Wheeler (Bethlehem, Pa.) eclipsed the 100-tackle mark this season, making it his third straight 100-plus tackle season. Xavier Marshall (Charlotte, NC) AND Philip O’Connor (Philadelphia, Pa.) followed by six each, while Marlem Louis (Venice, Fla.) got a sack for a loss of 12 yards. Protective treatment Matthew Fitz (Leesburg, Va.) threw his first career interception on a wild second-quarter pass.
Before the contest, Davidson led the nation in rushing offense, gaining 350.5 yards per game on the ground.
“I think everybody did a great job living up to their duties,” Wheeler said. “We’re super excited and super blessed to be in this position to play in these big games, and we’re going to [the game at Sacrament State] the same way we do every week and go in and play Richmond football like we’ve been.”
Saturday’s game marks the first meeting between the Spiders and Sacramento State (11-0) and comes as Richmond’s first game in California.
