UVA Health helping healthcare workers who experience workplace violence

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – A new federal study says health care workers are five times more likely to experience workplace violence than any other industry, and that most cases go unreported.

UVA Health is trying to make sure its staff stays safe.

“One thing we’re trying to do as part of our work is to increase the reporting of these events so we can help support our team members. We’re all here to take great care of patients, but it’s really important that our employees feel safe at work so they can provide that great care,” said Susan Jackie with UVA Health.

Aggression toward workers intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, and nearly half of nurses in a national survey say they’ve seen it where they work.

To that end, UVA Health has created an initiative for healthcare workers.

“That committee has a number of experts across UVA Health, but there are also a number of front-line team members who are part of that committee so they can provide first-hand experience. They can also provide first-hand advice about our interventions, and what is effective and what is not effective,” said nurse Ava Speciale.

The primary mission is to provide resources and strengthen training on how employees deal with workplace violence.
