The holiday travel frenzy was felt at Peoria International Airport

PEORIA (25 News Now) – This long Christmas weekend traditionally brings a busy day for many people at the airport, but with Monday’s snowfall, flights across the country and here in Illinois faced delays or cancellations.

In Peoria, many were anxiously waiting for their family members, who may have been sitting on the pavement for nearly an hour.

“The flight was late. He was supposed to be here at 2 o’clock today and they’re here, but they’re not off the plane,” said Christine Bollwinkle, one of many people waiting for the family at the airport.

At Chicago’s Midway Airport, hundreds of bags were left behind.

Southwest, one of the major airlines out of Midway Airport, canceled 68% of their flights, causing a domino effect for those who had a layover to fly into Peoria.

Taylor Turovskiy says, “It was supposed to be an hour and we joked that it would actually have been faster to drive here than to take the plane.”

Elias Bennett described his experience.

“Our flight from Chicago was delayed for about an hour. We finally got on the plane and then we had to sit on it for about 30 minutes after they drained it and then when we did land we ended up sitting on the runway for about an hour.

Others drove more than an hour to the airport on slick roads in an attempt to escape Elder Winter’s fury.

“So far it has been very easy. We just had to get off the interstate, which was a little snowy and rainy, but so far our flights are on time, so hopefully it stays that way,” said Lisa Hood, whose family is en route theirs to Cape Canaveral in Florida, where they have a second home.”

Mother Earth isn’t alone on the Red Planet, NASA just unveiled photos on Monday showing icy landscapes on Mars.
