Now that the 2022 awards season is officially upon us, we can take a look at the trends that laid the foundation for this year’s most popular red carpet looks. Your mind might instantly go to style-conscious pushovers like Zendaya, who memorably set new standards for the “cool” dress code in a white Valentino crop top paired with a long, silver-trimmed dress at the Oscars. Meanwhile, Tracee Ellis Ross’ red Carolina Herrera showed off another popular style in a stunning plunging corset dress at the same event. Other recurring looks included Valentino’s barbicore pink, dangerously high thigh slits, sheer cut-outs, micro tops and skirts and jeweled bras.
Valentino’s monochrome reign in particular began at the house’s Paris Fashion Week show in March, where he presented a fun collection filled with fuchsia, which inspired a vision of “love, community, energy and freedom.” Zendaya sat in the front row wearing head-to-toe shades, her outfit featuring a double-breasted floral-embroidered top, matching pants, suspenders, a button-down shirt and platform heels. It was at that moment that she became one of the first stars to inspire the Barbiecore trend. It’s no surprise that Savetti and Jenna Ortega followed the house’s new code at the Grammy Awards and the Met Gala, respectively.
And while wedges are always a bold choice, some of 2022’s most eye-catching looks have taken leggy looks to new heights. Chloe Bailey wore a sultry, purple beaded LVDF gown over a waist-length cut-out Oscar. Lizzo also fearlessly rocked a navy blue, glittery Gucci dress with a thigh-high slit for the BET Awards. Recently, Kylie Jenner attended the CFDA Awards in a one-shoulder black gown from Mugler’s Archive/Winter 1999 show with a high top and form-fitting dress featuring a high-waisted slit.
