A Republican senator is urging Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to demand that TikTok cut all ties to Chinese companies and force its parent company ByteDance to divest from the popular app.
Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) wrote to Yellen on Monday and cited Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee testimony from TikTok Chief Operating Officer Vanessa Pappas last week. Hawley said Pappas’ admission that the company’s China-based employees may have access to U.S. user data calls for action.
