Staunton businesses share reasons for shopping local

STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) – The weekend after Thanksgiving is considered a holiday for shoppers and stores. For shops like The Sparrow’s Nest, supporting local businesses makes a difference in what is unique and available to customers.

“If people don’t go out and shop local, then your local stores disappear. People really come out to shop that day, so you know people coming through the door mean business. They are ready to do their Christmas shopping and check everything off their list, so we try to have something for everyone,” said The Sparrow’s Nest Owner Heather DeBoe.

Small Business Saturday was created to support unique shops over franchises. Small business owners find the option to purchase a site a no-brainer.

“It is important to support local businesses. These are your tax dollars in your city. Why do you want to support corporations that already have enough money? Support local artisans and people,” said Words Matter gift shop employee Yvonne Surette.

American Express reports that 68 cents return to the community for every dollar spent at a small or local business.
