The modeling world is not typically known for progressive stances on age. However, little by little, adult models are making their way into the fashion industry. Sao Paulo-based Setsuko Saito, aka Rosa Saito, is one of those people. At the age of 68, she was approached to become a model. It took a year of persuasion—twice by a modeling agency and once by a photographer—but Saito finally decided to give it a go. She hasn’t looked back and continues to grow as a model years later at the age of 71.
Before modeling, Saito has been caring for others. She was a caregiver for her mother at the age of 22, and in 2000, her husband died and she became a single parent to their three children. Part of what motivated her to try modeling was that she had been “giving herself away” for so long. She didn’t want to live with regrets. “I’ll never know if I don’t try,” thought Saito.
Saito is a natural with her long, silver hair and strikingly beautiful pose. She is a versatile model and also appears in editorial, marketing and high fashion photo shoots. Saito is also no stranger to the runway and walked during Sao Paulo Fashion Week. She takes on new projects based on her adventurous spirit that has nothing to do with age. “I keep learning and the more I learn, the less I know. Indeed, time passes, but what is time, my God who lives in heaven? If I could give my life, I would give it 22.
