VIRGINIA BEACH – Sentara Health Plans announced Wednesday that Colin Drozdowski has been named President of Sentara Health Plans and Executive Vice President, Sentara Healthcare, effective September 1.
Drozdowski currently serves as Senior Vice President of Comprehensive Health Solutions at Sentara Health Plans and has served as Senior Vice President of Comprehensive Health Solutions at Sentara Health Plans since 2019.
Drozdowski succeeds Dennis Matheis, current President and CEO of Sentara Health Plans, who will transition to President and CEO of Sentara Healthcare on September 1.
“Colin is a growth-oriented and people-focused leader whose vision and commitments align with the future of our health system,” Matheis said. “He values innovation and has demonstrated his ability to effectively lead change throughout his time as Senior Vice President at the health plan. I look forward to continuing to work closely with Colin as the new health plan leader.”
Sentara cited Drozdowski’s involvement in helping to bring Virginia Premier to Sentara Health Plans, the largest transaction in Sentara’s history, among his key accomplishments.
Together under Sentara Health Plans, Optima Health and Virginia Premier serve more than 950,000 members and partner with 25,000+ physicians and more than 100 hospitals, including Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center.
Drozdowski has led a shift toward value-based care, built strong provider relationships, and made significant improvements to increase efficiency, improve the member and provider experience, and leverage unique capabilities and set Sentara apart as a integrated delivery system, according to the Sentara Announcement.

Prior to his work with Sentara, Drozdowski spent 26 years with Blue Cross and Blue Shield as Senior Vice President of Provider Solutions for Anthem, Inc. Drozdowski earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Hiram College and a master’s degree in Economics from Cleveland State University.
