From sound engineers and scriptwriters to celebrity artists and makeup artists, Variety’s “Ask an Insider” series asks top professionals within the entertainment industry to share their must-haves, for work … and play. In this installment, Modern Family star and future Love Island USA host Sarah Hyland shares her travel essentials this summer.

Sarah Hyland is on the move. The “Modern Family” star was recently in Berlin to shoot the upcoming “Pitch Perfect” spin-off movie “Bumper in Berlin” this Thanksgiving at the Peacock. This week, Hyland also announced that she traveled to the “villa” this year to make her reality TV debut on “Love Island USA,” a hosting gig that makes sense considering her high-profile engagement to former contestant “Bachelorette” Wells Adam.

In between her wild travel schedule and wedding planning (Hyland and Adams plan to marry this year after multiple pandemic-related postponements), Hyland found time to share her travel essentials with Diversity.

“If you ask my fiance, I overpack at the last minute,” says Hyland Variety. “My style of packing is all about options – sure, I pack a lot, but you never know what kind of mood you’re going to be in or if the weather is going to change drastically. I like to have lots of different outfits planned with basic, everyday items for every occasion.” One of her favorites? This oversized sweater from Free People.

Hyland also admits she still gets jitters before flying, despite how often she has to travel for work. “I’m a disaster in all the moments leading up to getting in the car to go to the airport – once I’m there, that’s what it is!” she said. “You can always buy underwear if you realize you didn’t pack them. How long do I have my passport, wallet, medicine and phone? I am fine.”

That said, it does have a few must-haves that make traveling simple that much more convenient and comfortable. Check out highlights of Hyland’s trip below:

“I need all chargers: portable, USB, USB-C. Whatever technology I rely on has to have a backup power bank. It’s the worst thing in the world for your phone or AirPods to die mid-flight. I especially love this one from Amazon.”

“I always take a big sweater with me because I’m always so cold on the plane that I always need one. At worst, I use it as a pillow. I’m a huge fan of this Free People oversized sweater.

“Eye masks are a must, I love the Slip brand! Silk eye masks help me stay asleep on the plane and are gentle on my skin and frizzy hair.”

Misty. Comfortable. Socks. Airplane floors make me crawl and I like to wear a specific pair of airplane socks. These barefoot dream socks are my favorite pair.”

“I always bring Sourse chocolate vitamins with me, specifically Glow Bites. Traveling can be very dehydrating and takes a toll on your skin – having these on the flight not only helps my skin retain moisture, but also serves as a sweet treat! They are plant-based, gluten-free and absolutely delicious.”
