For organizations that do their best work with virtual meetings, simply hitting a record or taking notes alone isn’t enough to capture everything that’s being said. Some build their own meeting integrations to capture data, but that can be time-consuming and costly. Recall.ai currently helps with an integrated API that works with Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams, and can be used to build apps that (among other use cases) populate CRMs or prompt customer representatives when making support calls. The San Francisco-based startup announced today that it has raised $2.7 million in seed funding.

Participants in the round include Y Combinator, Cathexis Ventures, Pioneer Fund, Rebel Fund, Bungalow Capital, SV Tech Ventures and Starling Ventures. Support comes from investors such as Sentry CTO David Cramer, Doppler CEO Brian Vallelunga, Cereal CEO Mike Adams, BlueTech CEO Austin Allred, and Runway founder Siqi Chen.

Recall.ai’s integrated API accesses meeting data, including real-time video and audio, who meeting participants are, when they speak and join or leave, and when screen sharing starts and stops. The company is currently in private beta, and its API is used by about 50 companies in a variety of industries, including sales, customer support, recruiting, user research, translation, education and healthcare.

Before starting Recall.ai, co-founders David Gu and Amanda Zhu worked on a research tool that generated real-time transcription from meeting recordings. He told TechCrunch that much of his team’s engineering time was spent building and maintaining meeting integrations, which made him realize that other companies looking to work with data integration face similar challenges.

The main problem Recall.ai is solving is getting raw video and audio data from video conferencing platforms. Mr. Gu said that it will take about a year for companies to build infrastructure and integrations on their own. But that’s not their only challenge—companies also have to deal with infrastructure that includes hundreds to thousands of servers. This is labor intensive as engineering teams have to track and measure everything. Recall.ai’s API not only makes building meeting integrations faster, but also means companies can abstract infrastructure.

Two examples of how Recall.ai’s customers are using the platform are capturing and transcribing audio streams, which are then translated to produce real-time translations. Another is using Recall.ai to capture video and audio streams from sales meetings to automatically populate CRM software.

Recall.ai is currently monetizing and monetizing customers every minute of audio and video being processed through the platform. The expansion plans include additional video conferencing and telephone system integrations.
