Lexington, Ky. (January 3, 2023) — Every new year comes with new trends in health, technology, climate, economy, politics, fashion and more. UKNow is exploring 2023 by asking experts from the University of Kentucky to predict and discuss upcoming trends in their area.
Scarlett Wesley, PhD, Director of Graduate Studies and Associate Professor in the Department of Retail and Tourism Management in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, shares her predictions for 2023 fashion trends.
do you know: How do fashion trends influence each year?
Wesley: Nowadays, social media is having a great influence on fashion trends. Literally overnight, someone on social media can gain a huge following, and brands are taking advantage of working with these influencers to reach audiences. However, as inflation rises, we will see spending cuts. This causes thrift clothing to become popular and encourages people to reorganize their closets.
do you know: What are the fashion predictions for 2023?
Wesley: Brown continues as a neutral trend. From soft baby pink to bold burgundy and maroon shades, we see shades of pink dominating. Wide leg pants will continue as we move into 2023 with a more oversized silhouette. I believe 2023 will be the year we use fashion to express your personal style more than ever before. Individuals are choosing what works for them and incorporating those fashion choices even if they look trendy.
do you know: What fashion trends do you think will last in 2023, and which ones do you think are dying?
Wesley: Wide leg pants and oversized clothing are here for at least the next year. A comfortable dressing concept as we still find ourselves staying in a lot and going out a little. What is dying are the strictest fashions. People want to feel comfortable more than ever. We continue to see more muted color palettes and calmer hues dominate all aspects of fashion.
do you know: Which decade do you feel was most influenced by the 2022 fashion trends?
Wesley: Certainly in the 1990s and early 2000s. Elements of these decades have been reinterpreted to appeal to today’s media savvy consumer.
do you know: What trends have you seen coming back this year from last year/years?
Wesley: Recently we’ve been seeing a fashion fad from the 1990s and early 2000s, with the popularity of flannel shirts, low-cut jeans and mini skirts, as well as tailored pieces like vests.
