Sydney startup Sitemate has raised $5.2 million for no-code software tools for companies in the construction sector.

The round was led by Blackbird, with existing investors Shearwater Capital and angels including local tech founders Tim Doyle of Eucalyptus and Propeller’s Rory San Miguel.

Coincidentally, Blackbird general partner Nick Crocker was running the Startmate program in 2017 when Sitemate, then known as Construction Cloud, joined the program and was deemed unlikely to survive.

right now Blackbird principal Tom Humphrey, who has joined the board, compares Sitemate to Atlassian, believing its path forward is closer to the Sydney software giant than proptech company Aconx.

“It’s a product-driven company bringing real-time collaboration and a seamless product experience to hundreds of millions of workers in hardhats and steel-toed work boots — just like Atlassian has done for software developers and software companies,” he said.

No coding tools like Canva, Jira, Trello, and Slack are part of the trend, allowing companies to design and implement streamlined digital processes relatively easily and at minimal cost.

Sitemate founder and CEO Hartley Pike, an engineer with experience in the training and construction sector, said the product was designed to be digital. It defines companies operating in any of the heavy industries, including construction, oil and gas, mining, manufacturing, energy, power, utilities, transportation, agriculture and facilities management.

They still rely on paper forms, physical folders and cumbersome legacy software to record, track and manage work, he said, recalling that during his time in the sector he spent half a day each week collecting paperwork. Divides half of the day.

“There’s an unfair assumption that built-world industries have ‘old-school’ workforces or are uniquely resistant to change, when in fact the software designed for them isn’t intuitive or easy to use.

“Unlike many white-collar industries that have had no code tools and paperless processes for years, many of the companies we work with were still doing their work manually. These companies are now able to easily digitize and streamline their end-to-end processes through our flagship product, Dashpivot Systems Cloud.

DashPivot Systems Cloud is an in-office digital database and workflow application that enables companies to easily select, create and customize any digital process that can touch multiple project entities and stakeholders – resulting in time and cost savings, improved compliance and better outcomes for all parties.

Shearwater Capital Managing Partner Zach Zavos originally invested in Sitemate in 2019 and has increased their investment in this round.

“The Sitemate team has a deep understanding of the problem they are solving and they have demonstrated a consistent ability to grow their clients up and down the cycle,” he said.

Sitemate now has a global customer base, with operations in Sydney and London and a North American office planned for later this year.
