LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Tech Terrace residents attended a community meeting hosted by Councilman Mark McBrayer to protest a proposed rezoning in the Tech Terrace neighborhood.
The proposal involves rezoning properties on the south side of 19th Street from Akron and Boston Avenues, including the Godbold Center and Cafe J, to make way for a 750-bed student complex and parking garage.
Amid the flurry of questions, residents expressed concerns about the traffic the addition would bring, its “fit” in the neighborhood and the issue of convenience for students who are forced to drive to campus versus walking as many currently do. One participant compared the proposed complex to a structure that would be found in a Soviet bloc country.
Earlier this month, Lubbock’s planning and zoning commission postponed a rezoning vote for the area. It will now consider the rezoning request next month.
