Drivers should expect delays when traveling to and along the North Shore and Highway 61 during the first week of August.
Between August 4-7 there are a number of major public events and construction projects on Highway 61 that will affect traffic flow. Events include the Two Harbors Cruise Festival and the Grand Marais Fisherman’s Picnic. As a result, significant traffic congestion is expected in Two Harbors, along Highway 61 and for the area in and around Grand Marais, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT).
Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead when traveling and to be patient especially in work zones.
Local and regional law enforcement are also advising the public to be aware of the potential risks associated with the number of people expected to visit the North Shore next week and into next weekend.
WTIP’s Joe Friedrichs spoke with Margie Nelson, a spokeswoman for MnDOT, about heavy travel and traffic conditions on Highway 61 during the first week of August. Audio below.
