Australia’s environmental startup accelerator and investor Ocean Impact Organization (OIO) is once again running its annual Ocean Impact Pitchfest to discover, support and accelerate startups working on solutions to transform ocean health.
Startups have a chance to win a cash prize of A$50,000, with an additional $50,000 for startups operating in certain ocean challenge and opportunity areas.
In the year Launched in 2020, the Ocean Impact Pitchfest saw more than 400 startups from over 45 countries apply for the program.
Last year’s winner was Tasmania-based Sea Forest, which grows Asparagopsis seaweed to be used as a supplement to cattle feed, reducing methane emissions by up to 98 percent.
Founder and CEO Sam Elsom said winning Pitchfest 2021 is a huge honor for Sea Forest.
“Our goal has always been rapid growth and a meaningful impact on climate change through the reduction of atmospheric emissions,” he said.
“We have a long way to go, but the company’s support through the Ocean Impact Foundation will help to drive marine forestry’s IP in science and engineering to deliver a sustainable aquaculture industry, regional employment and education opportunities, and positive environmental outcomes for planet Ocean.”
In the year The 2020 runners-up include renewable energy venture Wave Swell Energy, which has successfully tested its “bowhole-inspired” technology in Bass Strait off King Island. OIO Founder and CEO Nick Chiarelli said they were delighted to host another Ocean Impact Pitchfest 2022 with support from HP Australia and 50+ partners, including NSW Planning and Environment.
“Since launching the project in 2020, we have seen tremendous growth in the global ocean impact innovation ecosystem and as an organization,” he said.

This year’s Pitchfest offers $10,000 Spotlight Awards, which include five categories: Plastic Pollution Solution, Ocean Monitoring Solution, Sustainable Ocean Harvesting Solution and Ocean Climate Solution, and the inaugural NSW Ocean Innovation Award.
Demonstration of the influence of the ocean
On top of Pitchfest, the winner, runners-up and spotlight awardees will be presented live at “INNOVOCEAN”, OIO’s new flagship event showcasing innovative technologies that improve ocean health.
The NSW Department of Planning and Environment will support INNOVOCEAN at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney on 24 November. Various ocean impact startups will showcase their solutions directly from startups in the current Ocean Impact Accelerator Program 2022.
Six startups from Australia, Asia and the US are currently in the 7-month program and investing in building their innovative enterprises.
Funded by the NSW Department of Planning and Environment, the inaugural event will include a dedicated Pitchfest award for a startup working on ocean health solutions in NSW.
