(CBS Detroit) – A Detroit nonprofit promotes shopping black on Black Friday.
Black Leaders Detroit provides funding for a variety of social and community projects led by Detroiters. This Black Friday, the nonprofit is partnering with businesses in Detroit’s Fashion Shopping District to show shoppers what the strip has to offer.
“We have a wide range of people who support the work we do from all over,” said Dewan Dandridge, co-founder and CEO of Black Leaders Detroit.
According to Dandridge, hundreds of gift certificates were offered to shoppers to encourage those interested in shopping locally and buying black. He wants shop owners to know there are groups out there to support them. He hopes customers will recognize that and take the time to support these businesses.
“We feel like we’re bringing people from different backgrounds together to solve a problem that has historically plagued us as a community, not just the black community,” Dandridge said.
