One of the struggles of Monti Ossenfort’s first season as Cardinals GM is that the club will likely be without quarterback Kyler Murray for a significant portion of it.
After tearing his ACL against the Patriots in December, Murray will be on the sidelines indefinitely. In his introductory press conference Tuesday, Ossenfort said the Cardinals should back Murray to get healthy before anything else.
“We want to see him on the field,” Ossenfort said. “Again, I’m going back to that game two years ago at Nissan [Stadium, against the Titans]; I’ve seen what a healthy Kyler can do. I did a lot of work to get Kyler out of Oklahoma. I know he is extremely talented with his feet and his arm and yes that is a challenge for us.
“We’ll be ready for that, but the first order of business is to get Kyler healthy and help him in any way possible.”
To that end, with a coaching vacancy, Ossenfort said finding the right person specifically for Murray will not be a priority.
“We are looking for a head coach who can lead this whole organization. We’re looking for a coach that can develop all the players with Kyler being a big part of that,” Ossenfort said. “We want the right coach. Whether that’s an offensive coach or a defensive coach, it honestly doesn’t matter. We want the best coach and we have a plan for what we’re going to be as an organization; we’re going to develop our players and put them in the best position to make us successful and ultimately win.”
Former Dolphins coach and current Steelers assistant Brian Flores has emerged as a possible favorite to be the next Cardinals coach. But the club also recently met with former Colts coach Frank Reich and also submitted an interview request for Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero.
