There is no need to renew your wardrobe every season when you can create a completely new look with the items you already own.
Fashion expert Marie Erickson shares her best styling tips to make you look like you have a new wardrobe, and look more stylish and sophisticated.
“Stop scrolling because there are some tips and inspiration on how to dress better in the clothes you already own,” Erikson wrote in a video uploaded to her 212k TikTok followers.
“I’m going to show you lots of examples with plain, basic pieces you already have in your closet to help you visualize how you can apply this to your own wardrobe.”
The fashion enthusiast started with the concept of layers.
“So this is a tip that everyone talks about because it’s a tip you’re tired of hearing, but it’s really the best way to spice up any outfit, and I’ll tell you why.”
Erickson explains the top of the first layer using the example of a woman wearing blue denim jeans.
She wore a black cropped top with a long white button down, dark gray jacket.
Erickson touched on another example of layering, which she says may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but feels it’s “very beautiful.”
To replicate the look, get a long-sleeved sheer top and layer a black cropped cami over it.
Pair it with some jeans and high heeled boots and you’re set.
The stylist also highlighted more subtle ways of layering, allowing something to pop over the top or bottom of your outfit.
For example, he wears a button-down shirt that hangs off his shoulders and shows a hint of a lacy bralette.
Or, if you’re wearing a lace dress underneath an oversized crewneck sweater so that the lace peeks through.
“And here’s another example of how to layer a basic outfit. You just tie a sweater or a knitted cardigan over the base,” Erickson said.
She also mentioned her favorite way to sort like a pro. She said: “It’s actually three basic pieces, but when put together it looks super cute.
To create the look, layer a button-down shirt over the skirt and throw on a button-down knit skirt.
With a simple hat or bag, Erickson will elevate any look and give your outfit new life.
She used the example of a woman in an oversized white blouse.
The lady added hints of color to complete the look with a bright pink shoulder bag and top hat.
“Imagine how plain and boring this would be if we did away with the hat and bag,” Erickson said.
Showing another great example of how accessorizing can change your look, she says, “Here’s a great example of how you can style a casual jogger outfit with some jewelry.”
Adding stylish jewelry to your athletic look will take it to the next level.
Mix and match different items
Mixing and matching different textures is another tried and true technique for making the most of your laundry, according to Erickson.
She showed an example of a woman wearing a dress with different textures and told the audience that they should try to emulate it.
“For this outfit, we’ve got a silk shirt, we’ve got a leather bag, we’ve got a knit skirt, and we’ve got sheer socks. So start combining different textures and outfits that you haven’t thought of before.”
