Through an ever-changing world and a devastating fire, one place in Lubbock continues to uphold the tradition of good food, local music and a Texas-style atmosphere.
Chuck Kershner, owner of Four Bar K at 302 E. 82nd, took a moment after placing groceries in the bar’s kitchen to remember building his business, twice, in its 30-year history.
The Four Bar K Ranch, on 98th St., started the business when a friend asked if he could do something for a child’s birthday party. The party went well and more people managed to organize events.
“It became very popular,” Kershner said. “It got to the point where I was doing five events in a row on a Saturday. Then a bank group asked me if I could do their farm food, and that’s where it started.”
In December of 1991, Kershner purchased the former Tommy’s Place to become a rustic place. It also took inspiration from Little South Fridays, which opened for lunch only on Fridays on East Broadway during the 1980s. This led to the BBQ buffet currently in place.
The buffet features barbecue, sausage, several sides and chicken and dumplings for $15. He serves it himself, and guests are welcome for free beer and wine. Local musicians also perform during lunch.
The October lunchtime shows will be:
- October 14: Tim McKenzie
- October 21: Yvonne Perrea
- October 28: Gary Nix
“It’s the best deal in Lubbock,” he said.
As his 31st birthday approaches, Kershner recalled some interesting memories.
“I had one wedding where the father brought his Harley Davidson and the bride rode him down the aisle,” he said. “Last Saturday, I had a bride who was previously married here 26 years ago. She was remarried here and I thought it was very neat.”
Another big moment for the business came on October 21, 2002, when a fire destroyed the 6,500 square meter site. However, Kershner no longer sees it as a loss, as he was able to double the space and rebuild better, with the support of the community.
“It burned to the ground, but it was kind of a blessing because I immediately rebuilt it and doubled the size,” he said. “Randy Miller and his band built this new scene for me. Another customer donated all the bathroom supplies. It really made a difference and helped us.”
The venue offers indoor and outdoor space, catering and connections to florists and bakers. They can also provide a DJ or band. People can reserve a spot by emailing fourbark@suddenlink.net or calling 806-789-8682.
In December, the business will celebrate its 31st anniversary. People can keep up with Four Bar K through fourbark.com, Facebook and Instagram.
