Chicago Fire failed to secure a place in it 2022 MLS Cup Playoffs and goaltender Gabriel Slonina missed the final two games of the regular season with a head injury. The Fire had a poor end to their season with a 1-1 draw against the New England Revolution and they have won just two of their last ten games.
Slonina’s future is up in the air
The American goalkeeper is now set to travel to London to join Chelsea for a ‘training session’. Slonina will train with the Premier League team for a few weeks and then return to the United States to await inclusion in the USMNT World Cup squad.
Slonina has yet to receive a call-up to the United States men’s national team, so the chances of him traveling to Qatar next month are slim. After the goalkeeper’s return from his ‘training internship’ it is not known if he will officially join Chelsea in January or if he will be sent out on loan to another team.

Gabriel Slonina finished the MLS regular season with 12 clean sheets and conceded 32 goals in 32 appearances with the Chicago Fire in his first year as a starting goalkeeper. The American goalkeeper will have to wait until January to determine his immediate future as he has to fight for minutes at Chelsea with Kepa Arrizabalaga, Édouard Mendy and Marcus Bettinelli.
