TABLE, Ariz. – A shootout involving Mesa police officers and an out-of-state man wanted by authorities ended in a crash Sunday, Aug. 21.
The incident happened nearby Dobson and Base Streets.
Hours after the shooting, crime scene tape was still open and the car police say the suspect drove into Jimmy & Joe’s Pizzeria when officers opened fire remained at the scene.
Police explained what led up to the shooting.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety called Mesa police after suspecting a fugitive from Colorado with a felony warrant was in the area. Mesa police sent plainclothes officers to investigate.
They sat for several hours and watched. Officers located this vehicle, a black SUV, and the man DPS said matched the description of the Colorado fugitive.
That’s when the SWAT team was called.
Shortly before 5 p.m., the suspect exited the store, got into his car, and the SWAT team attempted to take him into custody.
“He refused all commands at that point. He put the car in drive and attempted to drive out of the control area by driving into the front of the retail business. That retail business not only had employees, but also had customers inside. ” said Mesa Police Det. Richard Encinas.
He says that at that moment there were 5 to 6 people in the pizzeria and no one was hurt.
A neighbor named Mercedes Taylor says she was nervous when she heard what was happening.
“I was actually on the phone talking to one of my friends telling her, you know, how safe Arizona was and how safe my area is and then I saw the crime scene van and I was like, yeah, maybe not,” she said. .
Mesa police are not yet releasing the name of the suspect or the charges the fugitive was facing in Colorado.
As for the suspect’s condition, he underwent surgery and is expected to be fine.
