First restaurant week boosts business after pandemic subsides


ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Monday marks the start of the first Rochester Restaurant Week, a week-long celebration showcasing Rochester’s diverse dining scene with more than 30 participating restaurants. However, the city has recently seen some classic restaurants close their doors.

“It’s a slow time of year, business is always really slow after the holidays, but even coming out of the pandemic, it’s still taking a while to get the big crowd that everyone is looking for,” said Experience Rochester President , Joe Ward. “We just thought what a great way to support him and hopefully this is the start of something for many years to come.”

Newts said that in 2020 there was less traffic downtown and it was difficult for them to recover, resulting in the restaurant having to close its doors. However, another location north of Rochester has benefited greatly from restaurant week.

“I think it builds awareness, there’s a lot of great restaurants out there, some are new and some have been here a long time, so it’s really an invitation for people to come out and see a favorite old or see something new. this week so long, it’s just one thing,” Ward said.

Sami Lo, owner of Otori Sushi is also participating in the restaurant week, she said that they had a full house today is convinced that this week will help her business.

“Our business is slowly getting better every day, we do a lot of social media to promote our restaurant so people know we’re here, we’re open we’re doing sushi and a lot of different kinds of food, so we’re coming back for normal business,” Lo said.

Lo says that because her restaurant also has a ride, it has saved her business from being threatened by the pandemic. Lo explained that her restaurant still sees customers who are reluctant to eat.

“Rochester like many cities across the country has had its fair share of struggles with the pandemic, but it’s a welcoming community again we continue to encourage people who are local to come back downtown or work remotely, we say hey you know come back downtown for dinner or lunch and I’m just looking forward to seeing everyone and getting back on track to support everyone in the future,” Ward said.
