Fashion is in the home-spun era. These were some of the wisest (and best) pieces we could find.

A home-spun, handmade aesthetic has swept the fashion industry in recent years, whether it’s for New York-based brand Bode’s exquisite patchwork jackets, a DIY celebration that saw a new generation embrace knitwear and bravado, or a resurgence of artisans and traditional crafts.

This season, techniques such as crochet, weaving and macrame appeared in collections around the world: in New York, designer Gabriela Hearst sent a series of macrame dresses to the runway and added crochet details to the skin. London-based Conner Ives created a loose macrame skirt and a sheer skirt; Australian designer Christopher Isber has included a range of fitted dresses and polo tops.

Such handiwork is most evident in accessories, such as at Lowe’s, with simple raffia baskets and leather bags made of fabric, made from factory crossings.

For his debut at Bottega Veneta, Matteo Blazzi created the brand’s Interraciato bags in rolled leather, highlighting the weaving technique, as well as strappy leather shoes.

New Zealand brand Wynn Hamlyn often uses craftsmanship in its collections, including wooden toggle buttons, needlework and embroidery.

“I’m always drawn to these elements. [they’ve featured] In every collection since the beginning,” says designer Win Crawshaw.

“Craftsmanship is a pillar of our brand, and we’re always looking, playing, exploring and showcasing every piece of craftsmanship we can.”

More recently, Crawshaw has been “heavily wrapped in macrame” in his Fall/Winter 2022 collection and again at Sydney Fashion Week, where it will land in stores in November.

One runway highlight included a maxi dress weighing 20kg, with glass beads made in Mumbai. “They had to change them [lighter] acetate beads for production,” added Crawshaw.
