Courthouse Road Improvements to benefit area businesses

GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) – Business is booming at Party Girls.

“We do balloon wreaths and party favors,” said co-owner Schankin. “We make food boxes, grazing boards.”

The family-owned store is celebrating five years in business.

“Our current five was in April, but we stay so busy that now we’re getting to plan something for ourselves instead of someone else,” Schankin said with a smile.

Party Girls is located on Courthouse Street. It’s a Gulfport stretch that received federal funding for improvements. The $5 million project took nearly seven years to complete. The aim was to improve Court Street and make it more attractive to investors and shoppers.

“It (business) has definitely improved,” Schankin said. “We will say whenever the construction was going on, we were a little concerned because there wasn’t that much foot traffic. Since the road ended, it’s been pretty awesome. We have people in and out all the time. It’s a great area to be in.”

The multi-million dollar project addressed lighting, turn lanes and sidewalks, among other things. The improvements helped increase traffic flow for Fleur De Lis owner Jason Brewer.

“The direct impact on the business has certainly increased it,” Brewer said. “It is a more beautiful road. It has increased the value because it is a more beautiful road, it has increased the value of the area. It’s a nicer presentation for your business.”
