Chuku fears his Nigerian tapas restaurant in High Road, Tottenham, could close after years of struggling with the epidemic and the current high cost of living.

Siblings Ifeyinwa and Emeka Frederick decided to create a campaign drawing in several customers, keeping the restaurant open until 2023.

A challenge was set on October 31 to get 600 sign-ups in six weeks – but they surpassed their goal by a third with 801 sign-ups.

“When we started paying six weeks, we thought six hundred bookings might be too big,” Ms Frederick said.

“To pass 200 is incredible and a testament to the power and importance of community.”

The public is encouraged to book a table between October 31 and December 11 to help the restaurant “get back on track” after the hospitality industry’s struggles over the past few years.

The campaign attracted many people including Hackney North and Stoke Newington MP Dianne Abbott, Watford centre-back William Trost-Ekong and Top Boy star Jolad Obasola.

A video highlighting the ordeal attracted more than 700,000 views on Twitter and Instagram and became a viral clip.

Chuku was opened five weeks before the Covid-19 was declared a global pandemic.

But despite receiving rave reviews, the restaurant has struggled with lockdown restrictions, staff shortages and overall costs.

In a video posted on his social media channels announcing the campaign, Mr. Frederick said: “We have to admit that we are struggling to open our doors.”

The owners say the message went “viral” and reached people around the world.

Mr Frederick said: “From day one of the campaign, the support came faster and faster. We are very grateful to be able to continue celebrating the best of Nigerian food and culture for now. But don’t forget we’re here 52 weeks a year – let’s keep this energy going.

“So please come down and tell your friends about us. Independent businesses need your support now more than ever!”
