Businesses stop together to bring free Thanksgiving meals to Evansville families

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Evansville’s ‘Sauced’ Italian restaurant is hosting a free Thanksgiving buffet.

Walton’s Smokehouse and Southern Kitchen is one of nine sponsoring businesses donating food.

Smokehouse manager Cassandra Davis says businesses in the area help each other out whenever they can.

“I’ve learned that the arts district is a very connected area, and any restaurant that’s able to help, we jump at the opportunity, no matter what it is,” Davis said. “So there’s not a lot of areas here in Evansville that would do that for the community, and I think that’s great.”

Walton’s Smokehouse will be giving away cherry, apple and peach cobblers for the Thanksgiving event.

The smokehouse’s management says they chose to donate the cobbler to the event because it can serve up to 70 people per pan and can be done quickly.

Smokehouse Kitchen manager Jeremy Moench says inflation is playing a big role in what their restaurant is able to donate to the event due to supply chain issues.

“Even some absences and I don’t even think it’s Thanksgiving,” Moench said. “I knew we were trying to get blackberry for the blackberry cobbler, you just can’t get it, it’s just not available.”

Moench says inflation is making things difficult for the restaurant to keep up with customer demand.

He says the cost of turkey has risen to almost $5 a pound, but price isn’t the only problem facing the restaurant.

“I might have a week where I order two cases of turkey and you might be able to get it that week, but you might not,” Moench said.

Walton’s Smokehouse management says inflation won’t stop them from returning to the community.

The Thanksgiving event will be held at the Sauced Ballroom at 1113 Parrett Street in Evansville.

The event is from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM on November 24th.
