DURHAM, NC (WTVD) — Rihanna Dress at halftime of the Super Bowl The performance could be both a tribute and a nod to the late fashion icon, North Carolina native and former Vogue editor-at-large Andre Leon Talley.
Talley frequently wore a red Norma Kamali sleeping bag coat. That coat was one of several items owned by the icon when it was auctioned off days later.
According to CNN, The February 15 auction generated nearly $3.6 million in bids.
Before becoming a world-renowned fashion icon, Tali had humble beginnings in Durham. He graduated from Hillside High School and North Carolina Central State University.

Talley was an American fashion journalist known for covering US Vogue and fashion in general. He was the magazine’s fashion news director from 1983 to 1987 and creative director from 1988 to 1995. He later became editor-in-chief, serving until 2013.
In the year In his 2003 memoir ALT, Talley described his childhood in Durham, where he was raised by his grandfather and worked as a taxi driver to save money. When it came time for college, he enrolled at North Carolina Central, majored in French, and later won a scholarship to Brown University. Shortly after graduation, Talley got his first job in fashion as a volunteer assistant to Diana Vreeland at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. After entering the fashion bubble, he landed a spot at Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine, where his journalistic career began, and later moved on to WWD, Vanity Fair, Vogue and various other publications.
