While some creatives discover their passion early in life, others find their calling at a young age. Kaya Aragon, an elementary school student in Colorado, has been taking the internet by storm with her handmade designs. She was even given a sewing machine by Vera Wang! This talented 9-year-old girl has been making her own clothes since November 2021 and dreams of becoming a professional fashion designer one day.
Aragon shares her growing clothing collection on Instagram. These custom creations range from glamorous dresses made from shimmering fabrics to casual tops that you can wear while working. “My inspiration for each design comes from a different place,” Aragon tells Me Modern Met. “One thing that lasts is that I only use the softest and most comfortable fabrics.”
As it turns out, comfort is a big motivator for Aragon, who was inspired to make her own clothes after being frustrated by the pre-election choices for girls her age. “I like making dresses because the pretty dresses in the little girls’ class are too tight and uncomfortable,” she explains. “With my own clothes, I can be very fashionable but comfortable at the same time. So I don’t have to go to a tea party and take my scooter to the park and change first.
Although Aragon has made many dresses, her current favorite is a pale pink dress with a shimmering hem and subtle pattern. “My favorite outfit [have] It’s a white satin dress that I made from fabric that I hand dyed,” explains Aragon.
