Caltrans and SANDAG opened a key freeway connector in Otay Mesa on Tuesday that promises to significantly improve cross-border traffic.
The $28.9 million project connects southbound Route 125 to westbound Route 905, which in turn connects the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry.
“The opening of the new connector marks an important step forward in improving the movement of people and goods across our bi-national mega-region,” said Caltrans District 11 Director Gustavo Dallarda. “With a new direct westbound link from East County, we will help alleviate traffic congestion and travel delays which in turn will improve the mobility of the border region.”
California Transportation Commissioner Larissa Falcon said the new connector “helps achieve our vision of a border corridor that is interconnected throughout the region, promoting transportation equity and economic growth for both nations.”
The project will also connect a third port of entry at Otay Mesa East, with a dedicated stretch of Route 11 set to open next month.
“The completion of SR 11 will be a monumental step forward in the development of the eastern Otay Mesa Port of Entry,” said Chula Vista Mayor Mary Salas. “Today, we are one step closer to delivering an innovative new border crossing that will reduce wait times, boost trade growth and strengthen our bi-national economy.”
