DJ SHERYL a.k.a Swapna Mhatre. A Mumbai-based Open format DJ and a Versatile Music Producer.
She started her musical journey back in May 2007 as an aspiring DJ.
She believes music has its own way of storytelling, so she never labeled herself as a specific genre-oriented DJ. She says we live in India where versatility is so widespread, and hence I like to learn and use various genres whenever I get a chance to perform or create.
DJ Sheryl had done a 7-day hobby class at one of her local DJ friends when it clicked on her, and that is how she thought of pursuing it on a serious note. Back then the Bollywood remix music era was too fresh, and one of her favorite tracks she remembers was the Bin Tere Sanam remix by DJ Suketu.Google was fresh too, and she did her little research and ended up enrolling in a pro DJ course at Audio Elite by the man behind the mix DJ Suketu.
Later she bragged a DJ Resident job for a year just to make her skills strong, and to learn profile scanning, yes that’s a very helpful skill to develop, as it helps a lot to deliver the right set of songs in the peak party.
As Sheryl gained ample in-house DJ experience, she switched up and started taking freelance projects.
After 5 years down the line DJ Sheryl wanted to upscale the art and hence she took up the scratch course (turntable act) at Grandmaster Jo Azaredo Academy, Azaredo Acoustics.
But the hunger for more knowledge never died and she ended up doing an Electronic Music Production at AudioQube – under Zoheb Khan & Bharat Goel.
Sheryl says work has taken me to places I can’t even imagine going to, because of wanderlust and events she has covered 18 countries so far. And almost all cities of India.
Experiencing different cuisines, cultures & rituals has been a major part of her life now.
And she simply loves it all.
Sheryl remembers March 2015 she got an offer to be on board as a faculty at a leading DJ Academy, Partymap by DJ Akhil Talreja.
And she took it without a blink of an eye, As it would contribute to another journey to experience. Sheryl did a 6yrs mentorship at the same academy, till we got hit with the pandemic.
And as she was in a music studio atmosphere her remixes started getting out, which was a problem to deliver consistently, when she was majorly touring. There are three full-length bootleg albums released by her out there on the internet.
During the pandemic, she launched her Independent Record Label, BOMBAE RECORDS which does music management, artist development & club consultancy.
Sheryl did club consultancy for Enigma the experience, Hyderabad (Dec 2021- June 2022)
Post that Sheryl along with Bombae Records on board been a curator and an active performing member in a DJ-based band, Kamli Saga (July 2022 – Sep 2023)
Sheryl always believed in investing her monsoons every year (as its a slack season) on artist/project development, Music creation/management or just pack the bags and go on a month-long vacation hopping countries with her squad.
2023 monsoon and the current season had been most interesting Sheryl says, she has wrapped up more than 25 tracks with multiple collaborations with various artists belting a wide range of genres and re-creating a remix world very differently this time.
Sheryl also says, Don’t be surprised if I throw an in-detailed real-life storytelling original composition/EP in between the new age remix release bandwagon.
